This Started as a Small Research Note
Pick a moment you’ve already lived.
You land somewhere new. Not dramatically new—just unfamiliar enough to feel promising. A place that looks like it has a personality. Maybe it’s a planet, maybe a biome, maybe a base you haven’t seen before. You walk. You look around. You do a few things. You learn a few quirks. You leave.
Nothing resists you.
You don’t mean that in the heroic sense. There’s no danger you expected and didn’t get. No dramatic failure. Just the quiet realization that staying longer wouldn’t have changed anything. Leaving doesn’t cost you anything either. You could come back tomorrow, or never, and the world would behave the same way regardless.
At first this feels generous. Liberating. The absence of friction reads as kindness. You’re not punished for curiosity. You’re not trapped by bad decisions. You’re allowed to roam.
But after enough repetitions, something begins to register—not as boredom exactly, and not as dissatisfaction—but as a kind of hollowness.
Nothing you do seems to accumulate.
You can go anywhere, do almost anything, and learn as much as you like—but none of it changes what the world expects of you next. Each new place feels like a fresh roll of the dice, disconnected from the last. Each decision evaporates as soon as it’s made.
You don’t feel wronged. You feel unburdened.
And that, it turns out, is the problem.
This was the feeling that wouldn’t leave me alone.
Not the lack of content. Not the lack of beauty. Not the lack of imagination. The lack of weight. The absence of places where decisions pile up. The absence of mistakes that linger long enough to teach you anything. The absence of commitment that costs you more than time.
I didn’t set out to critique games. I wasn’t thinking about game design as a field, or as an industry, or as a culture. Games were simply the most obvious place where the pattern revealed itself. They are large systems, run at scale, over long periods of time, with millions of participants pressing on them from every angle.
If something structural is missing, it shows up there first.
At first I dismissed the feeling. Not every experience needs to be meaningful. Sometimes wandering is the point. Sometimes spectacle is enough. Sometimes a world doesn’t need to care about you in order to be worth inhabiting.
But this felt different.
Exploration didn’t change anything. Learning didn’t narrow options. Leaving didn’t close doors.
The world was endlessly accommodating. It forgave every misstep before it could even be recognized as one. It made sure nothing ever pressed hard enough to matter.
And that generosity, over time, began to feel like a refusal.
Not a refusal to entertain—but a refusal to remember.
That’s when this stopped being a question of taste.
Because emptiness of this kind isn’t a mood. It isn’t about attention spans or content density or whether players “want more depth.” It’s an architectural property. It’s what happens when a system grows large without growing heavy—when it expands without developing places where force collects, where choices interfere with each other, where early decisions shape later possibilities in ways that cannot be cleanly undone.
In other words: when a system becomes large without becoming heavy.
I’ve learned to recognize that smell elsewhere. In systems that work beautifully right up until they don’t. Systems that pass tests, impress demos, scale effortlessly—and quietly shed the very distinctions that would have told them how to harden.
This was supposed to be a small note about that smell.
About persistence. About scale. About memory.
About what happens when forgetting stops being benign.
It was not supposed to become an argument.
But once you notice a system that refuses to remember, you start seeing the consequences everywhere. And once you start seeing the consequences, the note stops being optional.
It asks to be followed.
The Only Ground We Stand On
There is only one thing I am willing to assume going forward.
Not a worldview. Not a framework. Not a theory about games, or systems, or people.
Just a failure mode.
Some systems remember. Some systems forget.
And the difference between them does not matter much—until it matters completely.
At small scale, forgetting is often indistinguishable from mercy. You make a mistake, the system recovers. You try something naive, nothing catastrophic happens. You’re given room to explore without being punished for not knowing what you’re doing yet.
We like systems that behave this way. They feel humane. They feel forgiving. They feel designed by people who want us to succeed.
But that same forgiveness, carried forward without limit, becomes something else entirely.
Because forgetting is not neutral.
Forgetting removes distinctions. Forgetting smooths gradients. Forgetting erases the difference between what mattered and what didn’t.
And once a system grows large enough, that erasure stops being kind.
It becomes brittle.
This isn’t philosophy. It’s an engineering fact that shows up everywhere once you know how to look for it.
A cache that never invalidates stops telling you which data is fresh. A log that overwrites itself stops telling you what actually happened. A feedback loop that resets too quickly stops teaching the system what to avoid.
At first, everything seems fine. The system performs. It scales. It adapts. But quietly, it loses the ability to differentiate. Every input looks the same. Every outcome is treated as reversible. Every error is forgiven before it can instruct.
And when the environment changes—when pressure arrives from somewhere unexpected—the system has no memory to lean on. No accumulated bias. No place where weight has been allowed to settle.
It fails suddenly, and often catastrophically, not because it was overloaded, but because it never learned how to harden.
This is the only ground I’m standing on.
That systems which do not remember do not fail immediately. They fail later, and in ways that feel mysterious if you’ve only been watching the surface.
Another way to say the same thing is this: for a system to remain coherent as it grows, what it does at large scale must remain faithful to what actually happens at small scale. The coarse picture and the fine picture have to agree.
When they drift apart, the system starts lying to itself.
Quietly at first. Productively, even.
Until one day the lies align and the whole thing gives way.
I’m not asking you to accept any new language yet. I’m not asking you to think in unfamiliar dimensions. I’m not asking you to take on trust that there’s a deep structure here you haven’t seen before.
I’m asking you to recognize something you already know.
You’ve seen systems that feel responsive but never learn. Systems that adapt locally and fail globally. Systems that look robust until they aren’t.
You’ve seen what happens when nothing is allowed to persist long enough to matter.
This piece is about recognizing that same failure mode somewhere it hides particularly well: in worlds that are large, beautiful, and endlessly accommodating—and therefore unable to teach you anything that sticks.
Everything that follows is downstream of this.
Not as ideology. Not as preference.
As consequence.
The Comfortable Hypothesis
Once you notice thinness, there is a very comforting explanation waiting for you.
It sounds reasonable. It feels generous. It flatters both the builders and the audience.
The world just isn’t finished yet.
Procedural generation is young. The tools are improving rapidly. The compute budgets are finally getting serious. Of course the early versions feel shallow—depth takes time to emerge. Give it another cycle. Another hardware generation. Another few years of iteration.
After all, this is how progress usually works.
We expect complexity to behave politely. Add enough resolution and structure appears. Add enough variation and patterns emerge. Noise averages out. Edge cases dissolve. The system becomes legible once you step far enough back.
I believed some version of this story longer than I should have.
It fit the facts too well. The worlds were clearly improving. They were bigger, more detailed, more seamless. Systems that had once been clumsy were now elegant. Things that used to break under load were now stable. From a distance, it looked like the arc you’d expect from any maturing technology.
And for a while, the feeling of emptiness could be explained away as impatience.
Of course it feels thin—you haven’t seen enough yet. Of course it feels repetitive—you’ve only scratched the surface. Of course it hasn’t surprised you—you haven’t gone far enough.
So you go farther.
You explore more. You collect more. You unlock more. You push deeper into the catalogue, expecting that at some point the world will start pressing back. That the next horizon will finally be different in a way that sticks.
But something odd happens instead.
The more you see, the less you learn. The more places you visit, the less each place seems to matter. The more options you unlock, the less any particular choice seems to constrain the next.
Scale doesn’t cure the thinness. It amplifies it.
This is the moment the hypothesis should break—but often doesn’t, because there is always one more excuse ready to take its place.
Maybe the depth is there, but it’s hidden behind mastery. Maybe it only emerges at the extreme endgame. Maybe it requires social play. Maybe it requires self-imposed constraints.
Each of these explanations preserves the comforting idea that the system itself is fine—that the weight will eventually appear if you interact with it correctly.
But notice what all of them have in common.
They relocate the responsibility for meaning away from the world and onto you.
If the world doesn’t feel heavy yet, it’s because you haven’t pushed it hard enough. If nothing sticks, it’s because you haven’t committed. If exploration doesn’t teach you anything new, it’s because you’re doing it wrong.
That move should feel familiar.
It’s the same move you see in systems that don’t want to admit they aren’t learning. When feedback doesn’t arrive, the system blames the input. When outcomes don’t improve, it demands more engagement. When nothing accumulates, it insists you just haven’t tried long enough.
At some point, the pattern becomes impossible to ignore.
If depth were simply a function of quantity, ten hours of exploration would change how the next ten hours feel. A hundred would certainly do it. A thousand would be transformative.
But instead, the curve flattens.
The world remains impressive. It remains generous. It remains full of things to do.
It just never becomes heavier.
And that is the tell.
Because when a system grows without growing heavy, the problem is not missing content. It’s missing constraint. It’s missing the places where decisions pile up, where mistakes linger, where staying costs more than leaving.
The comfortable hypothesis fails not because the builders did anything wrong, but because it was asking scale to solve a problem that only memory can.
The next step is recognizing what replaces memory when it’s forbidden.
That’s where awe enters the picture—and why it’s both the gift and the trap.
Awe, Before Anything Else
Before thinness becomes a problem, it is a promise.
Before you notice what isn’t accumulating, you notice what is expanding. The scale. The color. The sense of openness. The feeling that the world in front of you is larger than the one you were in a moment ago.
This is not trivial.
Awe is not a trick. It’s not a cheap dopamine hit or a sleight of hand. Awe is what it feels like when your internal model realizes it has been underfitting reality. When the world presents more structure, more possibility, more variation than you were prepared to hold.
That reaction is physical. Your breathing changes. Your attention sharpens. Sometimes—this is the part people don’t say out loud—it hits hard enough that your eyes sting. There is a kind of quiet, overwhelming gratitude that comes with realizing you’re standing somewhere bigger than you expected.
That response is not childish. It’s not naïve.
It’s one of the most reliable signals we have that something real is happening.
This is why these worlds work at all.
They inspire curiosity without demanding competence. They invite exploration without threatening you for doing it wrong. They let you wander without preconditions. They give you the sense that whatever you find will be interesting simply because you found it.
For a while, that is enough.
For a while, awe carries the entire experience. Each new horizon feels like it might be the one where things finally click. Each new discovery feels like it might matter later, even if you don’t yet know how.
And in that early phase, the generosity of the world feels like kindness. You are not punished for not knowing the rules. You are not trapped by early mistakes. You are allowed to explore freely, to experiment, to roam.
There is a real, sincere achievement here. Designing a world that produces awe at scale is not easy. Doing it repeatedly, for years, without collapsing into cynicism or spectacle takes taste, discipline, and genuine care.
That’s why the critique that follows has to start here.
Because awe is not the problem.
Awe is the upside.
The problem is what happens after awe has done its job.
Because awe doesn’t just expand your sense of possibility. It destabilizes your sense of orientation. It floods you with connections before you know which ones are real. It makes everything feel potentially important before you have any way to tell what importance even means in this new context.
In other words, awe creates the conditions under which thinness can hide.
As long as the world keeps surprising you, it doesn’t need to teach you. As long as novelty keeps arriving, the absence of accumulation is easy to miss. As long as each moment feels fresh, you don’t notice that nothing is carrying forward.
This is why the emptiness takes so long to show itself.
It doesn’t announce itself as disappointment. It arrives as a subtle shift in your behavior. You stop staying in places. You stop committing to plans. You start moving on more quickly, not because you’re bored, but because there’s no reason not to.
The world has trained you to expect that nothing will punish you for leaving.
Awe has done its work—and now something else is supposed to take over.
But nothing does.
That’s when the gift turns bittersweet.
Because once you’ve tasted that kind of wonder, you want it to go somewhere. You want it to deepen. You want it to condense into understanding, into attachment, into stakes.
And when it doesn’t—when the world keeps offering you more sky without ever letting the ground harden underneath—you feel the loss not as anger, but as a quiet grief.
Something beautiful is being held just out of reach.
The next section names what that feeling becomes if you keep moving anyway.
The Upside and the Downside of Awe
Awe does not fade on its own.
It either condenses into understanding, or it curdles into something else.
The moment awe stops being enough is rarely dramatic. There’s no clear signal that you’ve crossed a line. You don’t suddenly feel bored, or angry, or cheated. You just keep moving.
You move because everything still feels possible. You move because nothing has told you to stop. You move because staying feels no different than leaving.
That’s when awe quietly becomes something more dangerous.
Vertigo.
Vertigo is not confusion. It’s not ignorance. It’s not being lost in the ordinary sense. Vertigo is what happens when your sense of possibility expands faster than your sense of orientation. When too many paths look viable. When too many edges of the graph glow at once.
It’s the feeling you get standing at the edge of something vast, where every direction looks promising and none of them feel anchored.
In that state, motion feels like progress. Exploration feels like learning. Connection feels like understanding. And for a while, that illusion holds.
Rabbit holes thrive here.
Rabbit holes feel exhilarating precisely because they exploit awe without demanding commitment. They light up pattern recognition systems before there’s any way to verify whether those patterns compose. They give you insight-shaped sensations long before they give you insights you can actually use.
And if you enjoy thinking—if you enjoy wandering intellectually as much as spatially—that pull can be irresistible.
I do.
I like rabbit holes. I like them deep and winding and longer than they have any right to be. I like following a line of thought until it exhausts itself completely, until it hits bedrock or collapses under its own weight. There is real joy in that. There is real knowledge there too.
If chronotopology offered nothing but that—nothing but endlessly interesting descents—I would still be doing it. Happily. For the sheer pleasure of knowing what’s down a path where it ends.
But rabbit holes have a cost that only shows up later.
They are terrible at teaching you where to stand.
When you finally try to climb back out—when you try to explain what you found to someone who didn’t take the same route—you realize something uncomfortable. You don’t understand nearly as much of it as you thought. Not in a way that transfers. Not in a way someone else can use without falling into the same holes you did.
That’s the moment vertigo turns into disorientation.
Disorientation isn’t about not knowing. It’s about not knowing what counts. Not knowing which distinctions matter and which are noise. Not knowing which insights are structural and which are artifacts of the descent.
Frontier research is full of people who didn’t fail because they were wrong, but because they moved too fast while everything still felt possible. They chased the shiniest edges of the graph. They accumulated a pile of locally correct statements. And then, months or years later, discovered that none of it composed into something they could return to, test, or teach.
Chronotopology makes this failure mode painfully visible because it forces you to ask a single, unforgiving question over and over again:
Can I stand here, or am I just passing through?
Awe tells you where something might matter. Vertigo tells you you’re not ready to traverse it yet.
This is why simplicity becomes a discipline rather than a preference. When everything feels connected, reducing degrees of freedom is how you avoid walking in circles. When every direction looks promising, refusing to commit is how you keep from committing to the wrong thing everywhere at once.
Local probes. Cheap failures. Clear stopping rules.
Those aren’t constraints on curiosity. They’re what let curiosity survive contact with reality.
And this is where the ethics of communication quietly enter the picture.
Exporting awe without footholds—handing someone else a dense paragraph that only makes sense if they’ve already acclimatized—doesn’t advance understanding. It spreads vertigo. It hands off disorientation as if it were rigor.
Institutional science has become uncomfortably good at this. Entire literatures now operate as if inducing disorientation in outsiders were evidence of depth rather than a sign that translation debt has gone unpaid.
That indulgence didn’t begin maliciously. It emerged because specialization pays, compression feels efficient, and no one is penalized for leaving others behind.
But the cost is real.
When knowledge stops being inhabitable, it stops being public.
Chronotopology insists on something unfashionable: the idea that if you can’t help someone else take a single safe step into the terrain you’re describing, you don’t yet understand it well enough to claim authority over it.
That doesn’t mean you’re wrong.
It means you’re still inside the awe.
And knowing when to pause there—when to let the vertigo settle, when to stop descending and start building footholds—is not a loss of wonder.
It’s how wonder becomes something you can live in.
Rigamarole as a Pressure-Sensing Stopping Rule
There is a moment in any serious line of inquiry when something shifts.
You’re no longer confused. You’re no longer merely curious. You’re no longer even uncertain in the ordinary sense.
Instead, you feel a very specific pressure.
The work starts asking for just one more thing.
Just one more exception. Just one more mechanism. Just one more layer to make the behavior “really” line up with your intuition.
Nothing about this feels wrong in isolation. Each addition is defensible. Each patch is locally correct. Each new rule feels like the obvious thing you would need anyway if you wanted the system to behave properly.
And that’s exactly why it’s dangerous.
This feeling has a name. It’s not technical. It’s not elegant. It’s not flattering.
Rigamarole.
Rigamarole is not inconvenience. It’s not frustration. It’s not the ordinary cost of doing hard work. Rigamarole is what nonlocal commitment feels like before you’ve admitted that you’re making it.
It’s the sensation of a system quietly demanding that you start coordinating decisions across distant parts of its structure. The feeling that a local change will only make sense if you also update five other assumptions somewhere else. The realization that fixing one thing requires you to implicitly commit to an entire worldview you haven’t actually tested.
In chronotopological work, that sensation is not a sign to push harder.
It’s a stopping signal.
Chronotopology works by local probes. You perturb something small, you watch what persists, and you stop the moment the signal becomes legible. The entire discipline depends on not smoothing over the moment when clarity gives way to scaffolding.
Because the moment you start building scaffolding to keep an idea standing, you’re no longer discovering structure.
You’re authoring it.
Rigamarole is the warning light that tells you when that line is about to be crossed.
I’ve learned to trust it for the same reason I’ve learned to trust certain smells in engineering. There is a point where a system stops resisting locally and starts leaking globally. You don’t need a formal proof to know you’re there. The sensation is unmistakable if you’ve felt it enough times.
The mistake people make is assuming rigamarole means the idea is bad.
Often, it means the opposite.
It means the idea is too big for the ontology you’re standing on. It means the structure you’re trying to uncover does not actually fit inside the coordinate system you brought with you. It means you’ve reached the load limit of the world you’re pretending exists underneath your model.
At that point, there are only two honest moves.
One is to fork the system—commit fully, build the cosmology, author the missing layers, and accept that you are now constructing a world rather than discovering one.
The other is to stop.
Stopping here is not cowardice. It’s not conservatism. It’s cost control. Nonlocal commitments are expensive, irreversible, and ambiguous when they fail. Local failures are cheap and informative.
So the rule becomes simple enough to memorize:
If learning what matters requires nonlocal commitment, stop.
Not forever. Just here.
You mark the edge. You note the pressure. You back up to the last place you could still stand without extra scaffolding. And you look for a different probe.
This rule doesn’t prevent deep insight. It makes deep insight possible. It’s the only thing that keeps awe from turning into ideology and curiosity from turning into self-deception.
And it sets up the distinction that matters for everything that follows.
There are two kinds of learning.
One kind pulls you downward into ever more intricate local coherence, where everything seems to fit as long as you don’t ask how to get back out.
The other kind builds footholds that others can use without sharing your vertigo.
The difference between them becomes painfully clear the first time you hit a rabbit hole that feels real and still have to walk away from it.
January 18 was one of those days.
Two Kinds of Learning
There are two very different ways learning shows up when you’re working at a frontier.
They feel similar at first. Both are energizing. Both feel like progress. Both can produce genuine insight.
But only one of them survives contact with other people.
The Rabbit Hole (January 18)
On January 18, I spent a few hours down a rabbit hole that began with something so small it barely registered as a decision.
A word stopped behaving.
Inheres had been doing quiet work for a while—useful, unobtrusive, good enough. It let me talk about things that stuck around without having to constantly explain what “exists” or “persists” meant in a given sentence.
And then it started slipping.
Not failing outright. Just failing to carry the load I was asking of it. There were structures I was trying to describe that were neither cleanly spacelike nor cleanly timelike, neither objects nor processes, but still exerted constraint over what could happen next regardless of how I looked at them.
I kept trying to patch the language. It kept asking for more.
That’s when the vertigo returned—not the emotional kind, but the cognitive kind. The sense that familiar axes were no longer orthogonal. That pulling on one concept dragged three others with it. That every sentence felt like it was one assumption away from collapsing.
For a few hours, everything connected.
Space and time stopped behaving like separate ledgers. Persistence stopped looking like a property of things and started looking like a property of relationships. The old vocabulary kept failing in small, irritating ways that were impossible to ignore once you noticed them.
So I followed the break.
What I ran into was not a new idea so much as a rediscovery of why certain old ideas exist at all. Why physics fused space and time into a single portmanteau instead of keeping them neatly separated. Why some distinctions only make sense until you push them hard enough.
At some point in that descent, I caught myself thinking a sentence that would have sounded ridiculous to me a week earlier:
the momenta influencing inherence events under mixed n-like projections in an event ontology derived from a causally bound spacetime
And the unsettling part wasn’t that I thought it.
The unsettling part was that it made sense.
That’s the danger point. The moment acclimatization masquerades as understanding. The moment local coherence starts to feel like global truth.
Because here’s the thing: none of that was ready to be explained. Not responsibly. Not without dragging someone else into the same hole and hoping they found the same footholds by accident.
That rabbit hole wasn’t useless. It surfaced real structure. It forced a concept to grow up. It showed me where the existing map broke.
But it also generated a massive amount of translation debt.
Everything I learned down there had to be paid back in method before it could be handed to anyone else.
So I stopped.
The Clean Probe
Now contrast that with something much smaller.
A clean probe is deliberately boring. It asks one narrow question, introduces one perturbation, and watches one thing.
In this case, the probe was simple: what happens to simultaneous player presence over time after a content release, if you don’t touch the signal at all?
No smoothing. No sentiment. No segmentation. No explanation.
Just presence—observed at a coarse grain—and whether that presence persists across days.
When the result shows up, there is no awe. There is no vertigo. There is no sense of standing at the edge of something vast.
There is just a shape.
A sharp spike that collapses. Or a smaller rise that refuses to die. A long tail that sits higher than you expected, longer than novelty alone can explain.
And that shape, once seen, is immediately usable.
Anyone can look at it. Anyone can reproduce it. Anyone can apply the same probe to a different system without needing to share your headspace or your metaphors.
That’s what public knowledge looks like.
Not deeper. Not flashier.
Just standable.
Why the Distinction Matters
Chronotopology needs both kinds of learning.
Rabbit holes are where new structure is found. They’re where concepts get stress-tested until they either collapse or grow strong enough to matter. Without them, you never leave the shallow end.
But rabbit holes are private.
Clean probes are how that private insight becomes something others can use. They’re how you pay down translation debt. They’re how you prevent awe from turning into ideology and cleverness from turning into authority.
This is why rigamarole is a stopping rule. It’s not there to protect you from difficulty. It’s there to protect you from confusing local coherence with global truth.
If you try to export rabbit-hole insight before it’s been methodologized, you don’t enlighten others.
You disorient them.
You give them the afterimage of understanding and ask them to reconstruct the experience that produced it.
Chronotopology insists on something stricter.
You don’t get to keep an insight just because it feels real. You don’t get to keep it just because it’s beautiful. You don’t get to keep it just because it took you somewhere strange.
You only get to keep it once you can show someone else where to put their foot.
Everything that follows—about thin worlds, procedural oatmeal, and the architecture of forgetting—depends on maintaining that discipline.
Because without it, even the most profound structures collapse into just another rabbit hole.
Why “Inheres” Had to Grow Up
At some point, words stop cooperating.
Not because they’re wrong, but because you’ve started asking them to carry more weight than they were designed for.
Inheres began as a convenience. A way to gesture at the fact that something stuck around without constantly re-arguing what “exists,” “happens,” or “persists” meant in a given sentence. It was small and flexible and good enough for a while.
Then it wasn’t.
The failure was subtle at first. Sentences that used to feel precise started leaking meaning at the edges. You could still make them work, but only by leaning harder on context, adding more qualifiers, slipping in assumptions you hadn’t meant to commit to yet.
That’s usually the moment people double down on terminology. They sharpen definitions. They formalize. They lock vocabulary into place so it stops squirming.
I did the opposite.
I followed the break.
What became obvious very quickly was that inheres wasn’t failing because it was vague. It was failing because it was being asked to describe something that didn’t sit cleanly in the categories I was using to think about it.
Some things weren’t just there. They weren’t just ongoing.
They were exerting constraint.
They were shaping what could happen next, regardless of whether you treated them as objects or processes, regardless of whether you looked at them “in space” or “over time.” They mattered because they continued to matter, even when you stopped paying attention to them.
Existing language kept trying to force those structures into one of two buckets:
Spacelike things, which exist somewhere. Timelike things, which happen and then pass.
But what I was seeing refused that split.
That’s where the physics analogy stopped being optional.
There’s a reason space and time were fused into a single portmanteau. Not because physicists like poetic words, but because treating them separately hid structure that only became visible once you stopped pretending the distinction was fundamental.
The move wasn’t to abolish space or time.
It was to recognize them as projections.
Useful views of something deeper, but not the thing itself.
That realization translated almost embarrassingly cleanly.
Spacelike inherence and timelike inherence weren’t two kinds of phenomena. They were two ways of slicing the same underlying constraint structure. Which one dominated depended on the grain you were looking at and the question you were asking.
And sometimes, neither slice was enough.
That’s where the idea of n-like projections came from—not as a grand abstraction, but as an admission of humility. The terrain clearly had more degrees of freedom than the coordinate system I was using to navigate it.
Calling that underlying terrain extension space wasn’t an act of confidence. It was a refusal to commit prematurely. A way of saying: there is structure here, but I don’t yet know how many axes it actually needs.
This is the point where people often get nervous, and for good reason.
Because this is also the point where you can start generating sentences that feel extremely smart while doing very little work.
You know the kind I mean.

If you’ve spent enough time down the hole, that sentence will eventually make sense.
That’s not the achievement.
That’s acclimatization.
The achievement is noticing that moment and not trusting it yet.

If you try to freeze the vocabulary here, you miss the point. If you rush to declare the ontology finished, you turn a frontier into a museum exhibit.
So inheres gets to be a first-class concept—but it stays provisional. Spacelike and timelike projections get to stay useful—but not privileged. Extension space gets to exist as a placeholder—because placeholders are how you keep from lying to yourself when you don’t yet know what belongs there.
This is what rabbit-hole learning looks like when it’s handled responsibly.
You let the concept grow. You let it break the old map. And then you stop, before the urge to sound definitive outruns your ability to stand anywhere new.
Everything up to now has been preparation.
The next step is where this stops being about language and starts being about worlds.
Procedural Oatmeal
By the time you can name it, you’ve already tasted it.
Procedural oatmeal is not repetition. It’s not sameness. It’s not a lack of imagination or effort or care. In fact, the worlds that produce it are often overflowing with imagination. They are colorful, varied, generous, and meticulously assembled.
That’s why the problem is so easy to misread.
Procedural oatmeal is what happens when a world becomes vast without becoming thick—when it offers infinite variation without allowing any of that variation to accumulate consequence.
You can tell you’re in one because nothing ever quite presses back.
Places differ, but they don’t diverge. Actions succeed, but they don’t commit. Mistakes happen, but they don’t linger.
Everything works everywhere, eventually. Every strategy is viable if you’re patient enough. Every path remains open, no matter how often you abandon it.
At first, this feels like freedom.
You are not punished for curiosity. You are not trapped by early decisions. You are not excluded for showing up late.
But look closely at what that freedom costs.
A world that must remain hospitable everywhere cannot allow any place to become meaningfully better than another. A world that must remain fair to all arrivals cannot allow scarcity to bite. A world that must remain accessible forever cannot allow choices to foreclose futures.
So the architecture compensates.
Resources regenerate. Terrains reset. Systems rebalance.
Not because designers forgot to make them persistent, but because persistence would strand someone. It would create asymmetry. It would introduce the possibility that a player arrived after something important had already happened.
Procedural oatmeal is the result of designing around that fear.
The world doesn’t merely reset—it is actively forgiving. It erases the past continuously, quietly, and with good intentions. It smooths over the places where weight might otherwise collect.
And in doing so, it eliminates the conditions under which meaning can accumulate.
This is why exploration slowly collapses into tourism.
Exploration is only discovery if it teaches you something you can’t learn elsewhere. If every horizon offers novelty but no commitment—if leaving never costs more than staying—then moving on is always rational. You are not mapping a world. You are sampling a catalogue.
Eventually, the catalogue becomes so large that sampling loses urgency. There will always be another planet. Another biome. Another roll of the dice. Nothing tells you this is the place where it matters to stop.
Gathering collapses in the same way.
Gathering is only meaningful when it forces you to choose—when taking one thing means not taking another, or taking it here means not taking it there, or taking it now means not taking it later.
But in a world that cannot afford to strand players, gathering must be globally viable and endlessly repeatable.
So materials respawn. Inventories expand. Recipes accumulate.
Gathering becomes bookkeeping. You stop asking what should I commit to building and start asking how many stacks do I need?
None of this is a failure of player imagination.
It is the rational response to a world that refuses to remember.
And this is where the thinness finally reveals itself.
A thin world is not empty because it lacks features. It is empty because it cannot support extension. The moment you try to add a new meaningful affordance—something that actually changes how agents behave over time—the world demands that you hand-build everything beneath it.
There is no latent structure to absorb the change. No geometry to bias outcomes. No accumulated constraint to do the work for you.
Every improvement exposes the void underneath.
That’s why procedural oatmeal worlds feel impressive and brittle at the same time. They scale outward beautifully, but the moment you try to deepen them, they fracture into special cases and hand-authored rules.
And it’s why adding just one more deep system so often explodes into an unmanageable web of exceptions.
The problem is not that these worlds are wrong.
The problem is that they are too thin to bear weight.
They cannot carry causal scars. They cannot let history pile up. They cannot teach through resistance.
So they rely on awe to carry the experience instead.
And awe, as you’ve already seen, is not enough.
Procedural oatmeal is not an argument against procedural generation.
It is an argument against procedural amnesia.
You cannot fix it by adding more content. You cannot fix it by increasing fidelity. You cannot fix it by layering mechanics on top of mechanics.
You fix it only by allowing the world to remember—by letting some places become better and others worse, by letting early decisions echo forward, by letting the cost of a mistake be something other than time.
Everything that follows in this piece—about fruit trees, yak shaving, constrained construction, and emergent story—is downstream of that single constraint.
If the world cannot remember, it cannot teach.
And if it cannot teach, no amount of beauty will make it feel alive for long.
Thinness, Not Sameness
At this point it’s tempting to misunderstand what’s gone wrong.
Procedural oatmeal doesn’t come from repetition. It doesn’t come from lack of imagination. It doesn’t come from laziness, budget constraints, or insufficient cleverness.
It comes from thinness.
Thinness is what you discover the moment you try to deepen a world instead of widen it.
I learned this the hard way by trying to fix one thing.
Just one.
I wanted fruit to exist in a way that felt like an apple tree.
Not literally an apple tree—no meshes, no leaves, no bark—but something apple-tree-like in behavior. A persistent structure. Local. Quiet. Something that didn’t shout its importance, but that biased nearby futures just enough that an attentive agent could discover it, return to it, and decide to stay.
So I built a fruit-generator-like inherence event.
A spacelike structure that biased extension space locally so that fruitlike inherence events would intermittently fall into the worldline. Not guaranteed. Not scripted. Just probable in a way that felt right.
Technically, it worked.
And that’s when the alarm went off.
Because once fruit existed this way, everything else followed inevitably.
To make fruit matter, it had to be scarce enough to be worth finding. To make scarcity matter, agents had to compete. To make competition matter, the world had to differentiate where fruit could appear.
And the moment I did that, something broke in a very specific way.
Even unintelligent, agent-like learners—animals, essentially—would converge on farming as a strategy.
Not because they were clever. Not because they had foresight.
But because the world made it inevitable.
Farming wasn’t an intelligent response anymore. It was an agentic default.
That’s when it became clear that the problem wasn’t fruit.
The problem was that the world had no geometry.
What I actually needed wasn’t fruit that fell from trees, but world structure that determined where fruit-generator-like inherence events could be grown at all.
And once you say that out loud, the cascade is immediate.
Now you need terrain that can support growth. You need environmental conditions that vary meaningfully. You need something like soil, and water, and air.
And the moment you say sunlight out loud, you’ve bought yourself astrodynamics.
Each of these is reasonable. Each of these is correct. Each of these demands the next.
And each one pushes you further away from discovering structure and closer to authoring a cosmology.
That’s when I realized what was happening.
I wasn’t discovering structure anymore.
I was shaving yaks.
On purpose. As a grind.
This is what thinness looks like from the inside.
A thin world cannot absorb new meaning. It cannot propagate constraint naturally. Every deep affordance demands that you author everything beneath it, all the way down.
That’s not a tooling problem. It’s not a missing feature.
It’s an ontological limit.
Thin worlds are impressive because they scale outward easily. They can support enormous surface area, enormous variety, enormous novelty.
But the moment you ask them to bear weight, they collapse into hand-authorship.
Every attempt to deepen them exposes how little is actually there.
This is the same failure mode you see in procedural oatmeal worlds at scale.
They aren’t empty because they lack things. They’re empty because they cannot support extension without fiat.
And that’s why the fix is never just add one more deep system.
Because one more deep system will always ask for five more beneath it.
That’s thinness announcing itself.
And once you learn to hear that sound, you stop mistaking it for friction.
You recognize it as a diagnostic.
Procedural Oatmeal Is the Problem — Yak Shaving Is the Instrument
Before the fruit problem became a diagnosis, it was a deliberately modest probe.
At that point, I wasn’t trying to deepen a world. I was trying to use a new engine—one grown out of the constraints described in Papers 1–28—to observe how learning agents behave when placed inside a universe that actually respects those constraints.
The engine itself was intentionally spare. Not toy-simple, but honest. Flexible enough to behave thinly or thickly depending on what you asked of it. Strict enough that you couldn’t smuggle in structure without paying for it.
The question I was probing was narrow.
What does learning look like when events actually inhere?
Not as objects. Not as scripted spawns. As events—things that arrive, persist, and continue to constrain what can happen next.
That framing mattered. Chronotopology doesn’t let you add “stuff” without consequence. If something exists in the world, it has to inhere as an event with causal mass, not as décor.
So when I reached for fruit, I did the simplest honest thing.
I didn’t make trees. I didn’t make soil. I didn’t make climate or seasons or growth cycles.
I introduced fruitlike inherence events with a uniform local probability bias.
Every locality in the world had the same bias. The global distribution was flat. No place was special. No region was privileged. Fruit could inhere anywhere, with equal likelihood, simply because the local geometry allowed it.
This wasn’t a shortcut. It was discipline.
If chronotopology was going to teach me anything, it had to be allowed to speak at the level of events first—before I started carving the world into places.
And it worked.
Fruit appeared. Agents encountered it. Agents learned that fruit mattered. Agents returned to where fruit had inhered before.
Learning was happening. Memory was being rewarded. Futures were being biased.
So I let the system run.
And that’s when the result stopped being ambiguous.
Every agent converged on the same strategy.
Not just the clever ones. Not just the ones with long horizons.
Even the simplest agent-like learners—barely more than conditioned responders—ended up doing the same thing.
They stayed. They waited. They extracted.
Farming emerged everywhere.
Not as intelligence. Not as culture. Not as strategy.
As inevitability.
And this is where the vertigo returned—not as confusion, but as over-clarity.
Because the problem was not that the fruit model was too simple.
The problem was that it was uniform.
Once fruitlike inherence events were equally likely everywhere, farming ceased to be a learned adaptation and became a global default. There was no environmental pushback. No locality where farming was harder. No region where a different strategy paid off.
Uniform bias erased differentiation.
At that moment, the next step wrote itself in my head, fully formed, in exactly the way dangerous thoughts always do:

Mad as a hatter.
And also—completely correct.
Because all that sentence is really saying is this:
Apples come from apple trees. Apple trees don’t grow everywhere. And if they did, we would just amplify the very problem we were trying to solve.
The language is ridiculous because it’s trying to pay off a missing world in prose.
What I had just discovered, in real time, was that the moment you ask a uniformly valid event to become conditionally valid, you have two options.
Either:
You further specify starting conditions by hand—adding soil here, rain there, sunlight over there, and eventually orbital mechanics to justify the sunlight.
Or:
You flip the engine into thick mode.
Those are the only honest choices.
In theory, either path can get you an apple tree.
In practice, only one of them does not invite rigamarole.
The first path is authorship. You build the universe from scratch, layer by layer, justifying each choice with another paragraph, another mechanism, another dependency. It works—but only because you never stop explaining.
The second path is discovery. You let the world’s geometry do the work. You let non-uniform constraint emerge as a property of the system rather than as an imposition from above. You accept that if apples are going to come from apple trees, then apple trees have to be something the world itself knows how to make hard.
That realization is where yak shaving finally reveals its true role.
Yak shaving is not about unnecessary work. It’s about being forced into work you didn’t intend because the system beneath you cannot support what you’re asking of it without being replaced.
If you’ve spent time writing code, running systems, or keeping infrastructure alive under real load, you already know the feeling. You try to do one small, reasonable thing, and the system refuses.
To add the feature, you refactor the module. To refactor the module, you update the dependency. To update the dependency, you change the build. To change the build, you rewrite the deployment pipeline.
None of this is waste. None of it is arbitrary. Each step is locally justified.
And yet you are now shaving a yak.
That’s exactly what the fruit problem revealed.
I didn’t stop because I was tired. I didn’t stop because I needed sleep, a shower, or breakfast before my next available appointment with the yak at the front of the line.
I stopped because the signal was clean.
The rigamarole wasn’t coming from fatigue. It wasn’t coming from poor tooling. It wasn’t coming from lack of will.
It was coming from the world itself.
The simulation was telling me something precise:
If you want differentiation, you must supply geometry. If you want geometry, you must author a universe—or let one exist.
That’s not a bug.
That’s a diagnosis.
And it’s the same diagnosis you eventually run into in every procedural oatmeal world that has scaled outward faster than it has thickened inward.
Procedural oatmeal is the problem.
Yak shaving is the instrument that reveals it.
In a thick world, you can introduce a meaningful event and watch structure propagate naturally. The world absorbs the change. You don’t need to justify everything else.
In a thin world, even the most careful, uniform, minimal probe collapses into authorship the moment you ask it to differentiate.
That’s not because you’re doing it wrong.
It’s because the world is thin.
So the heuristic becomes simple enough to trust:
If a uniformly valid event immediately demands non-uniform world geometry to remain meaningful, the world is thin. If a uniformly valid event differentiates naturally without extra scaffolding, the world is thick.
Yak shaving tells you which one you’re in.
That’s why rigamarole isn’t friction to push through. It’s information. It’s the pressure gauge.
The moment the needle jumps, you stop pretending you’re still working locally.
And that’s why chronotopology insists on restraint.
Not because complexity is bad. Not because ambition is suspect.
But because complexity that must be hand-built everywhere is indistinguishable from fiction.
The goal is not to avoid yak shaving forever.
The goal is to use yak shaving until it teaches you where the world stops having anything to say on its own.
Procedural oatmeal is what you hit when the world runs out of structure.
Yak shaving is how you find the edge of that silence.
When Exploration Becomes Tourism and Gathering Becomes Bookkeeping
Once you’ve seen thinness from the inside, you start recognizing its downstream effects everywhere.
Not as failure. Not as boredom.
As adaptation.
In a thin world, agents do exactly what they should do.
They stop staying.
Exploration becomes tourism not because players lose curiosity, but because curiosity stops paying rent. You go somewhere new, you look around, you learn a few surface features, and you leave—because there is no reason to linger. Nothing you do there compounds. Nothing you learn there changes what the next place will ask of you.
Staying longer does not deepen the world. It only delays the next roll of novelty.
So moving on is rational.
This is not a collapse of attention. It’s a collapse of incentive.
When leaving costs nothing and staying yields no additional constraint, the optimal strategy is to keep moving. You are not mapping a terrain; you are sampling a catalogue.
And catalogues reward breadth, not depth.
The same logic governs gathering.
In a thick world, gathering forces commitment. Taking one thing means not taking another. Taking it here means not taking it there. Taking it now means not taking it later. Resources are not just quantities; they are claims on futures.
In a thin world, those claims evaporate.
Resources respawn. Inventories expand. Recipes accumulate.
Gathering becomes bookkeeping because bookkeeping is the only thing left to optimize. You stop asking what should I build and start asking how many stacks do I need.
Again, this is not a failure of imagination.
It is the correct response to a world that refuses to remember.
Players build orchards and trophy cases not because they are shallow, but because those are the only strategies that compound in a system where the environment itself will not. When the world cannot carry history, players carry it themselves. They collect proof of having been there because the place itself cannot remember them.
You can see this adaptation everywhere once you know what to look for it.
Players optimize routes instead of places. They chase efficiency instead of attachment. They treat locations as consumables rather than commitments.
And crucially, they are not wrong to do so.
The world trained them.
A thin world quietly teaches its inhabitants that nothing is worth investing in deeply. Not because investment is punished, but because it is never rewarded with anything that sticks. Over time, even awe stops inviting engagement and starts inviting motion.
This is why the most electric moments in these worlds are always the same kind of anomaly.
Build-under-constraint. Limited space. Irreversible layouts. Delayed payoffs.
Anywhere the world briefly stops forgiving and starts pushing back, players light up. Not because the mechanics are “better,” but because the environment finally agrees to carry some of the burden of meaning itself.
Those moments feel rare because they are rare. They are pockets of thickness in an otherwise thin ontology.
And they reveal something important.
Players are not asking for more content. They are asking for places where staying costs something. Places where leaving costs something. Places where decisions pile up and cannot be trivially undone.
They are asking the world to remember them.
This is why procedural oatmeal is so insidious. It does not announce itself as emptiness. It presents itself as generosity. It gives you everything while quietly refusing to take anything back.
And in doing so, it trains perfectly reasonable agents to behave in ways that look disengaged only if you ignore the structure they are responding to.
Once you see this, a lot of arguments about “player behavior” evaporate.
The behavior is fine.
The world is thin.
Build Under Constraint (The Accidental Proof)
If thinness were the whole story, this would be a bleak essay.
But it isn’t. Because even inside the thinnest worlds—worlds built under constraints that all but forbid memory—there are moments where something different sneaks through.
They are easy to miss. They’re rarely marketed as revelations. Often, they aren’t even noticed consciously at first.
They just feel different.
These are the places where the world, briefly and often unintentionally, stops forgiving you.
Build-under-constraint systems are the clearest example.
Limited space. Hard boundaries. Layouts that cannot be rearranged without cost. Decisions that take time to undo, or cannot be undone at all.
In these pockets, something snaps into focus.
Suddenly, you hesitate. Suddenly, you plan. Suddenly, the order of operations matters.
You feel yourself leaning forward, not because the system is punishing you, but because it has finally agreed to remember what you do.
Nothing magical has been added here. There is no new spectacle. No flood of content. No explosion of variety.
What’s changed is not what you can do, but what the world will carry forward once you’ve done it.
That single shift—from reversibility to persistence—changes everything.
A constrained build space does not have to be realistic to feel real. It doesn’t need to model physics accurately. It doesn’t need to simulate a believable economy. It just needs to make some choices stick long enough to matter.
That’s why these systems punch so far above their apparent weight.
Players don’t respond to them as features. They respond to them as places. Places you return to. Places you protect. Places you optimize not because you have to, but because optimization finally means something.
You can see the behavioral shift immediately.
Players stop rushing. They stop sampling. They stop treating the environment as disposable.
They start caring.
Not sentimentally. Not narratively.
Structurally.
They care because the world has taken on some of the burden of meaning itself.
And here’s the important part: this response is not accidental.
It’s not nostalgia. It’s not preference. It’s not “base building is fun.”
It’s the same response you see in any system where persistence is introduced after a long absence. The moment something stops resetting, agents recalibrate. They slow down. They take stock. They become strategic—not because strategy was missing before, but because it finally pays.
This is the accidental proof.
Designers didn’t stumble onto something fun by chance. They stumbled onto thickness.
In a world where almost everything is reversible, any island of irreversibility feels electric. Not because it’s harsh, but because it’s honest. It tells you, without words, that what you do here will still be true later.
That honesty is rare.
It’s also fragile.
These pockets of constraint are almost always isolated. They’re carved out carefully so they don’t infect the rest of the world. They’re often surrounded by systems that immediately soften their edges—ways to undo, reset, rebuild, or escape the consequences if they become uncomfortable.
And they have to be.
Because extending that kind of persistence globally would break the promises thin worlds are built on. It would strand players. It would create asymmetry. It would introduce the possibility of regret.
So the thickness is quarantined.
But quarantine doesn’t negate the signal.
The fact that these systems feel so different—even when they’re small, even when they’re optional—tells you exactly what’s missing elsewhere. It tells you that players are not starved for content. They are starved for places where their decisions are allowed to accumulate.
This is why the response is so consistent across genres, across audiences, across playstyles.
The moment the world agrees to remember, players agree to care.
Not because they’re told to. Not because they’re rewarded to.
But because the environment itself has finally become a participant.
That’s the proof.
Not that constrained systems are better, but that memory is the missing ingredient. Wherever it appears, behavior changes. Wherever it disappears, behavior flattens.
Everything we’ve talked about so far—procedural oatmeal, thinness, yak shaving, tourism, bookkeeping—can be traced back to that single absence.
And that brings us to the necessary clarification.
Because pointing at the exception without naming the struggle that produced it would be dishonest.
This Is Not an Indictment
Before going any further, this needs to be said plainly.
What I am describing here is not a failure of imagination. It is not a lack of care. It is not a deficit of intelligence, taste, or effort.
If anything, it is the opposite.
The worlds that exhibit procedural oatmeal are not cynical cash-ins. They are not careless products of minimal ambition. They are the result of people who cared deeply enough to keep going long after most others would have stopped.
They are built by teams who chose generosity over cruelty, accessibility over exclusion, wonder over punishment. Teams who looked at what could go wrong in a large shared world and decided—again and again—to err on the side of letting players roam freely rather than trapping them in irreversible mistakes.
That choice has a cost.
And the people who paid it were not the players. They were the builders.
As someone who has built systems under pressure, I recognize the shape of that cost immediately. The endless edge cases. The quiet heroics of making something scale without shattering. The discipline required to say no to elegant ideas because they would strand users or fracture communities. The grind of shipping fixes that do not advance the vision but keep the thing alive.
When you push a world as far as these teams have pushed theirs, you don’t run into shallow problems. You run into structural limits.
Limits that don’t announce themselves as errors. Limits that don’t show up in early tests. Limits that only appear once the system is large enough, loved enough, and inhabited enough that forgetting becomes policy rather than accident.
That’s what this essay is pointing at.
Not a mistake.
A frontier.
The reason a world like this makes such a good example is not because it fell short. It’s because it went far enough to reveal the edge.
It kept going when others pivoted, rebooted, or quietly gave up. It absorbed years of iteration, critique, and reinvention without collapsing under its own weight.
That endurance is not trivial. It is not common. And it is not free.
As a scientist, I admire what these worlds have done to inspire curiosity-driven exploration for nearly a decade. Very few works—of any kind—manage to keep that impulse alive without collapsing into cynicism or spectacle.
As an engineering-minded founder, I admire the elegance underneath the surface. The disciplined architecture that lets something this large keep working at all. The invisible decisions that trade expressiveness for robustness, depth for survivability, risk for continuity.
As a business owner, I understand what it means to take a small team and attempt something that audacious—and then to keep spending success on the unglamorous work of maintenance, iteration, and care.
If I know anything from my own experience, it is this:
The reality of that struggle is almost certainly worse than even my most sympathetic attempt can come close to guessing.
That’s why this critique is not written from above.
It’s written from nearby.
From someone who has stared at the same kind of limits, felt the same pressure to shave yaks indefinitely, and had to decide whether the next layer of explanation was discovery or invention.
The point here is not that these worlds should have been built differently.
It’s that they show us something important about what cannot be built without a change in ontology.
Procedural oatmeal is not the result of bad decisions.
It is the result of good decisions made under constraints that did not yet admit a better option.
And that is exactly why this matters.
Because once a frontier is visible, continuing to treat it as a local design problem becomes a form of denial.

Single-player worlds can cheat. They can be unfair. They can strand you. They can let you make a terrible decision and live with it forever. If the world becomes hostile, that hostility belongs to you alone. If something important is lost, it is your loss.
Shared worlds don’t get that luxury.
The moment more than one person inhabits the same space, fairness becomes a structural requirement. Not moral fairness—architectural fairness. The kind that prevents the system from tearing itself apart under accusations of favoritism, exclusion, or griefing.
And fairness, at scale, demands reset.
If a place can be permanently ruined, someone will arrive too late. If a resource can be permanently exhausted, someone will be excluded. If a decision can permanently foreclose futures, someone will regret it loudly.
So the world must forgive.
Quietly. Continuously. Everywhere.
This is not a design failure.
It is an ontological consequence.
A shared world that remembers too much becomes hostile to new arrivals. A shared world that carries irreversible scars creates asymmetry that compounds socially. A shared world that allows early players to shape the terrain permanently locks later players into someone else’s past.
So the architecture compensates.
Zones reset. Resources respawn. Events repeat. Consequences soften.
The world remains large, welcoming, and available—at the cost of memory.
And that cost is not subtle.
Story requires asymmetry. It requires loss. It requires the possibility that something happened here that will never happen again.
In a shared world built on reset, those conditions cannot be allowed to persist globally. The moment they do, the social fabric begins to tear.
So story migrates.
It doesn’t disappear.
It just leaves the world.
You can see this everywhere once you know what to look for.
The drama happens on Discord, not in the terrain. The betrayals happen in spreadsheets, not in cities. The legends live in forum posts, not in ruins.
Guilds form elaborate social structures because the world itself cannot hold one. Players create narratives about the world because the world cannot carry narrative within itself.
This isn’t because designers don’t understand story.
It’s because story and fairness are mutually hostile under a thin ontology.
A world that remembers enough to generate story is a world that will eventually become unfair. And a world that must remain fair at all times cannot afford to remember very much.
So the memory budget is spent elsewhere.
It’s spent on cosmetics. On unlocks. On achievements. On personal progress bars that move forward without changing the terrain.
These are safe places to put persistence. They don’t strand anyone else. They don’t alter shared geometry. They don’t create social debt.
But notice what kind of memory this produces.
Not world memory.
User memory.
The world forgets so that players can remember privately.
And that trade-off is rational.
It’s the only way to keep a shared world from becoming uninhabitable over time under the assumptions it was built with.
Which is why critiques of shared worlds so often miss the mark.
They argue about content cadence. About balance. About incentives. About engagement loops.
All of that is downstream.
The real constraint is simpler and harsher.
You cannot have a globally fair, infinitely accessible, shared world that also accumulates irreversible history without a different ontology.
That doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
It means it can’t be done this way.
And that’s the point where the conversation has to change.
Because once you see this, it becomes clear that adding more systems will never solve the problem. Tuning mechanics won’t fix it. Better writing won’t save it. No amount of live-ops finesse can conjure memory out of an ontology that forbids it.
What’s needed is not a better design.
It’s a different kind of world.
Learning to Live in It Natively
Once you recognize the limit, you have a choice.
You can keep arguing about it from the outside—debating design decisions, policy trade-offs, incentive structures—or you can accept that you are standing on unfamiliar ground and learn how to move without pretending it’s familiar.
I chose the second path, not because it was cleaner, but because it was the only one that didn’t feel dishonest.
When you encounter a genuinely new slice of worldline—one where the old instincts no longer fire reliably—you don’t yet know how to live there. You don’t know which habits still help and which ones quietly sabotage you. You don’t know what counts as progress, or what counts as noise, or what kinds of mistakes are recoverable.
Frontier work feels like that because it is that.
The temptation, especially if you are fluent and capable, is to rush. To lean on cleverness. To reach for the shiniest edges of the graph because they promise the biggest payoff. But that impulse is exactly how you end up exporting vertigo instead of understanding.
So I slowed down.
Not by thinking harder, but by changing the medium.
I started writing code.
Not because code is more “rigorous” in some abstract sense, but because it is less forgiving. Code does not let you hand-wave. It does not let you imply structure that isn’t there. It does not reward elegant explanations that cannot survive execution.
If you are wrong, it breaks. If you are vague, it refuses to run. If you are cheating, it shows you immediately.
That’s why code became the way I learned to live inside these constraints rather than just talk about them.
The playground I built was not meant to be impressive. It was meant to be honest. A place where I could ask small questions and watch the system answer back without editorializing the response.
Could an agent discover something real here? Could that learning persist? Could different starting conditions lead to genuinely different futures?
And just as importantly:
When I pushed too far, did the world push back—or did it quietly accept whatever story I told it?
That distinction matters.
A thin world lets you do almost anything. It rarely says no. It accepts explanation in place of structure. It allows you to build castles in the air as long as you keep justifying them.
A thick world is stingy. It resists. It refuses to cooperate unless you’ve actually earned the move you’re trying to make. It forces you to notice where your intuitions stop matching the terrain.
Learning to live in that kind of world is not about optimizing faster. It’s about developing a sense for when to stop.
That’s where the earlier stopping rules become practical rather than theoretical.
When rigamarole appears, you don’t push through it. When yak shaving escalates, you don’t romanticize it. When the urge to explain outpaces the system’s ability to demonstrate, you back up.
You treat those sensations not as obstacles, but as signals—indicators that you’ve reached the edge of what the current ontology can support.
This is what it means to learn natively.
Not to impose meaning from the outside, but to let the world teach you how it wants to be understood. Not to rush toward total explanations, but to build footholds that others can use without sharing your vertigo.
And this is where the earlier distinction between rabbit holes and clean probes stops being academic.
Rabbit holes are how you discover that something exists. Clean probes are how you make that discovery public.
Living natively inside a new ontology means learning when to switch between the two—when to descend and when to climb back out with something you can carry.
That discipline doesn’t make the work smaller. It makes it transferable.
It’s also why I’m comfortable letting large parts of what I’ve seen remain unnamed for now. Not because they’re unimportant, but because naming them prematurely would freeze them in the wrong shape. The terrain is still teaching me how it wants to be described.
Chronotopology, at this stage, is not a finished map.
It’s a way of not getting lost while one is being drawn.
And that, more than any particular result, is the practice I’m trying to share.
Because if there is one thing frontier work demands above all else, it’s the willingness to admit—out loud—when you don’t yet know how to live somewhere, and to resist the urge to pretend otherwise.
Everything that follows takes that posture as a given.
Studying Moments and Their Shadows
Once you accept that most of what you see in frontier work is not yet exportable, the question becomes very simple.
What is?
What can you look at, right now, without smoothing it, rescuing it, or explaining it away—and still learn something that other people can use without sharing your vertigo?
The answer I arrived at was almost embarrassingly small.
Moments.
Not outcomes. Not narratives. Not explanations.
Moments—and what they cast forward.
In practice, this meant choosing an observable that met three criteria at once.
It had to be real behavior, not reported sentiment. It had to aggregate independent choices without coordination. And it had to be difficult to fake for long.
Simultaneous player presence over time met those criteria cleanly.
At any instant, a concurrent player count is a coarse-grained spacelike snapshot: many independent agents choosing to inhabit a world right now. Not later. Not nostalgically. Not aspirationally.
Presence is not approval. It is not satisfaction. It is not endorsement.
It is simply the decision to stay.
That decision, repeated across many agents, is a spacelike inherence proxy. And when you watch that proxy persist—or fail to persist—across days, you are watching a timelike shadow form or dissolve.
This is the only move I allow myself here.
No smoothing. No normalization. No interpretation layered on top.
I don’t correct for holidays. I don’t adjust for marketing. I don’t explain spikes.
Those are all narratives. And narratives are exactly what thin systems use to disguise the absence of memory.
Instead, I treat each content release as a perturbation and ask a single question.
Did this change alter the world’s capacity to hold people without further prompting?
If the answer is yes, the curve refuses to collapse. It settles into a higher basin. Presence becomes self-sustaining for longer than novelty alone can explain.
If the answer is no, the spike decays. Quickly. Reliably. No matter how impressive the surface features were.
This is not a judgment of quality.
It is a test for causal mass.
A world with thickness can absorb a perturbation and remain altered by it. A thin world cannot. It returns to baseline because there is nothing for the change to bind to.
This is why I resist richer metrics here.
Retention curves, sentiment analysis, engagement scores—all of these integrate over time and interpretation. They tell stories. They reconcile contradictions. They smooth over the very discontinuities that tell you whether memory exists at all.
Chronotopology is interested in those jagged edges.
It asks: what happens immediately after the perturbation, and what refuses to die?
Those are moments. Their persistence is the shadow.
And because the method is minimal, it is also portable. Anyone can apply it. Anyone can look at the same data and see the same shape without agreeing on why it looks that way.
That’s the point.
This isn’t about proving a thesis. It’s about showing where weight accumulates without editorial help.
The moment you start touching the signal, you stop learning what the world is doing and start learning what you want it to be doing.
So I don’t.
I look. I wait. And I let the shadow tell me whether anything actually stuck.
Everything else in this essay—procedural oatmeal, thinness, yak shaving, constrained construction—exists to make sense of what that shadow means once you’ve seen it.
But the shadow comes first.
Because without it, you are just telling stories.
What the Shapes Look Like
Once you commit to watching moments and their shadows without touching the signal, a small number of shapes appear with uncomfortable reliability.
They don’t announce themselves as categories. They don’t need theory to be recognized. They show up as curves that either refuse to die—or die immediately.
The most common shape is the spike.
A release lands. Presence jumps. Attention floods in. The curve rises sharply, peaks, and then collapses back toward baseline with mechanical predictability. Sometimes the decay is fast. Sometimes it’s a little slower. But it always ends in the same place.
The world returns to what it was before.
This is not failure. This is novelty.
Novelty is powerful. It draws attention. It creates motion. It excites curiosity. But novelty does not bind. It does not attach to anything. It does not change the underlying capacity of the world to hold people once the stimulus is gone.
The spike is noise.
The second shape is rarer—and harder to mistake once you’ve seen it.
A release lands. Presence rises, but not explosively. The initial jump may even look underwhelming compared to more spectacular updates. And then something subtle happens.
The curve doesn’t fall.
It wobbles. It settles. It finds a higher resting place than it used to occupy.
Days pass. Sometimes weeks. And while the initial excitement fades, presence does not return to baseline. It persists at a new level, as if the world itself has learned how to hold people a little better than it could before.
This is the long tail.
The long tail is not hype. It is not marketing. It is not delayed appreciation.
It is causal mass.
Something about the world has changed in a way that allows behavior to bind to it. New strategies become viable. Old strategies become obsolete. Decisions made after the update do not behave the same way decisions made before it did.
The world has thickened.
This is why the long tail matters more than the peak.
Peaks tell you how loud something was. Tails tell you whether anything stuck.
You can fake a peak. You cannot fake a tail for long.
And importantly, these shapes do not require interpretation to be legible. You do not need to agree on why a curve settled higher to recognize that it did. You do not need to assign intent, quality, or virtue to see that the system now behaves differently under load.
That’s why this method works at all.
It doesn’t ask you to explain success. It asks you to notice persistence.
The distinction between the two shapes is not moral. It’s not aesthetic. It’s architectural.
In a thin world, perturbations wash out. There is nothing for them to bind to, so the system returns to equilibrium quickly. The world is impressive, responsive, and fundamentally unchanged.
In a thick world, perturbations alter the topology of future behavior. The system does not simply revert. It incorporates the change.
That incorporation is what we’re watching for.
And this is where a lot of arguments dissolve.
People argue endlessly about quality, intention, design philosophy, and player psychology. Those debates are not useless—but they are downstream. They all assume that the world has already done the work of remembering.
The curves tell you whether it has.
If presence settles higher and stays there, the world learned something. If it collapses back to baseline, it didn’t.
Everything else is commentary.
This is also why the method remains deliberately austere.
The moment you try to explain a tail, you risk rescuing it. You start attributing it to reasons you prefer. You begin integrating context that may be irrelevant. You blur the distinction between what the system did and what you think it meant.
Chronotopology doesn’t forbid explanation. It postpones it.
First, you watch the shadow. Then, if it persists, you earn the right to ask why.
That discipline is what keeps you from confusing cleverness with structure and novelty with memory.
And once you’ve seen these shapes a few times—once you’ve watched spikes die and tails refuse to—you stop needing to be convinced.
You start asking a different question.
Why is thickness so rare?
That’s where the method turns back on the world, and where the final pieces of the argument come into view.

At this point, the obvious objection presents itself.
If you’re already looking at player presence over time, why stop there? Why not include retention curves, sentiment analysis, engagement metrics, conversion funnels, or any of the other instruments that modern analytics offers in abundance?
The answer is not that those tools are useless.
The answer is that they do something different.
Richer metrics integrate. They smooth. They reconcile. They turn jagged behavior into coherent narratives. They answer questions like why people stayed, how satisfied they were, what drove engagement, which features performed best.
Those are not illegitimate questions.
They are just the wrong questions at this stage.
Chronotopology is not trying to explain behavior. It is trying to detect whether the world itself changed in a way that altered future behavior.
That distinction matters.
The moment you introduce richer metrics, you introduce interpretation. You start collapsing multiple time scales into a single story. You start averaging over the very discontinuities that tell you whether memory exists at all.
Smooth curves are comforting. They are also deceptive.
They make systems look stable when they are actually brittle. They make transient effects look durable. They make noise look like signal.
Most importantly, they make it very easy to lie to yourself without realizing you’ve done it.
This is not a hypothetical concern.
Any sufficiently rich metric can be tuned to tell a story. If presence drops, you can explain it. If it rises, you can explain that too. The explanations may even be true in isolation.
But they obscure the one thing we actually care about here: did the world learn how to hold people, or didn’t it?
Moments and their shadows answer that question cleanly.
A moment is unambiguous. Someone is here, now. A shadow is unambiguous. They are still here, later.
Everything else is commentary layered on top.
This is why minimalism here is not austerity. It’s discipline.
By refusing richer metrics, you deny yourself the ability to rescue a result you don’t like. You give up explanatory comfort in exchange for epistemic honesty.
You also gain something else.
Longevity.
A method that depends on complex interpretation breaks as soon as contexts shift. A method that depends on moments and persistence survives changes in culture, genre, and platform. It continues to work even when you don’t know what the new stories are yet.
That’s what makes it suitable for the long arc.

The Fixed Point
At the end of all this—after awe and vertigo, after thinness and yak shaving, after rabbit holes and clean probes—there is something almost disappointingly simple left standing.
Something either persists, or it doesn’t. If it persists, it constrains what can happen next.
That’s it.
Not a worldview. Not a metaphysics. Not an ideology about how the world ought to work.
A fixed point.
You can reason from it plainly. You don’t need to swallow a vocabulary or accept a doctrine to use it. You don’t need to trust the author or the framework or the conclusions. You can look at a system—any system—and ask the question yourself.
Does this thing leave a shadow?
Does it change the space of future possibilities in a way that remains true even when no one is watching, even when the novelty fades, even when the explanation stops being repeated?
If the answer is yes, you are looking at something with causal mass. If the answer is no, you are looking at something thin, no matter how impressive it appears.
This is why chronotopology appeals to scientists when it lands.
Not because it is radical. Not because it is clever.
But because it is anchored.
It does not ask you to reason from authority. It does not ask you to accept a picture of the world whole. It asks you to start from a place you already know how to trust: persistence under perturbation.
Physicists recognize this instinct immediately. So do engineers. So do biologists, economists, and systems thinkers of all kinds. It’s the habit of mind that says: show me what survives when conditions change.
Everything else is commentary.
This is also why the method feels austere, even when the ideas themselves are expansive. Once you have a fixed point, you don’t need to chase every shiny edge of the graph. You don’t need to rush toward total explanations. You don’t need to pretend that acclimatization is understanding.
You can stop.
Stopping here is not resignation. It’s orientation.
It means you know where to put your feet. It means you can tell the difference between novelty and memory, between motion and progress, between explanation and structure.
And once you can tell that difference, a lot of confusion evaporates.
Procedural oatmeal stops looking like a design failure and starts looking like a boundary condition. Yak shaving stops looking like frustration and starts looking like information. Awe stops being something you chase endlessly and becomes something you respect without obeying.
Most importantly, you regain the ability to build.
Not by adding more layers. Not by telling better stories.
But by insisting that the world itself do some of the work.
That insistence is not limited to games.
It applies to science. To institutions. To infrastructure. To any system large enough that forgetting can be mistaken for flexibility.
Once you see how thinness hides inside generosity, how reset masquerades as kindness, how explanation can replace structure, you start seeing the same pattern everywhere.
And you start asking a different question.
Not how do we optimize this?
But what would it take for this to remember?
That question is the beginning of thickness.
